What is Ultra Modern? All inspiring, whimsical, and all imaginative in a new way!
So many people ask this question of me when I am suggesting a new way to go with their design decisions for their home or office remodel. The most common misconception is that contemporary is modern, or even ultra modern, when in fact the term contemporary means what ever the current trend is at that time in the current year or decade you are living in!
I believe this misconception has been carried over from the 1970’s when the term “contemporary modern” was used frequently and was depicted in many 1970’s modern and futuristic movies. However, in this decade, that’s not what our contemporary is all about. Actually, quite the contrary! Our current climate for design today in 2011 is very old world to traditional. When someone says let’s give this an updated look, what they really are saying in today’s thinking, is let’s go and make everything look old again but with new hardware! This is the state of comfort design, comfort food and comfort dressing. These are the days of lazy afternoons with lazy dogs sitting around with nothing much to do but see what’s on T.V. or YouTube. Gone are the days of the fast cats, sleek and modern on the hunt for a new world, a new thrill of futurist styling that could knock your socks off! No, the people of today like to be safe in these times, rapped up in the arms of an winged back easy chair or snuggled in their cherry or mahogany wood Sleigh beds, fast asleep in the good old past.
It’s a new beginning in the future.
Well, this may be your future, or someone you know, but for me, the abstract artist, the world of the modern is about new, exciting, different, creative and stimulating, in an invigorating yet calming, beautiful way of unfolding spaces that give hope to a new beginning of a new modern world. Not the past that seems to stay old.
Welcome to my world of the modern. For those of you living with the chickens, black and white porcelain cows and dried flowered wreathes on your front doors, what I will be talking about now is what Ultra Modern Style feels like!
“Abe Lincoln or the highway”, I think not! For those of you who are brave enough not to be afraid of their “Life Clock”, get ready for the ride of your life tour of ULTRA MODERN STYLE through the eyes of an artist, okay, my eyes.
Okay, lets get this party started. We’re gonna party like it’s 1976 in the modern days, where Farrah Fawcett would welcome you to the world of the future in the movie “Logan’s Run”. Not like today in 2011, where most everyone doesn’t even know what modern is anymore!
First off, no need to fear Ultra Modern. It can be as soothing as a day at a beautiful high-tech spa, or the restaurant that you only eat at when you’re in the big city, or in Europe. When I think of ultra modern, I think of clean lines and sleek surroundings that embrace your inner child mind, simple and fresh, like being safe in the womb again. As if you are seeing and experiencing something new for the first time in your life with all these modern visuals giving you a real awakening of your senses that won’t let your spirit go.
Some ultra modern interiors go practically minimalist. Imagine yourself in a calm, relaxed room, devoid of much fuss or clutter, with just a soothing, tranquil and restful space you can unwind in. Cool and simple, yet sophisticated. With your essential interior streamlined for design and function’s sake, your mind is clear in your ultra modern surroundings.
Ultra modern style doesn’t have to be cold or hard; it can also incorporate all the elements of nature with the beauty of natural stone, marble, and granite along with warm woods in sleek clean lined patterns of simplicity. Also, this ultra modern stuff doesn’t have to be all white. It can be vibrant colors with the use of high contrast black and whites involving metal families that are warm. Copper, bronze, and gold palettes can be added to ultra modern settings for the “Bling factor”. Using natural fiber fabrics and materials can also be added to ultra modern spaces, giving it a more human touch of texture and form.
Colors of the earth, or “Earth Tones” as they use to say in the 1970’s , can warm your soul and be used in design concepts that have a whole new meaning other than the traditional ways that are plainly displayed in today’s decor.
Glass and steel can be intriguing, luminous in light and form, and used to create optimum light filled spaces with sunny exposures, for a feeling of spaciousness as vast and open as far as the eye can see, unlike some closed in traditional spaces.
Let’s drive off into the sunset to the Ultra Modern World!
So come on everybody to this new century, jettison the junk, try and follow the path to an enlightened sanctuary of a minimal existence in the new ultra modern world! Never forget, if you don’t move you won’t groove, so get a step on it, your future world is only as far as your mind can imagine!
